RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia high school students are asking Gov. Northam to postpone graduations and proms rather than cancel them in a new petition.

"We are already losing school time with our close friends that we’ve been with for twelve years, and will soon separate from, so don’t take away something that can be postponed," said the petition. "The mental health of high school students is already declining due to this time away from school and having to face so many uncertainties."

The Change.org petition already has over 8,000 signatures with a goal of 10,000.

Students say they are signing because they "don’t want these big moments stripped away" from them.

The petition states that students have worked hard the past 12 years and deserve to be a part of the decision.
