RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police has responded to a viral video appearing to show a Richmond officer spitting on a detained protester.

The department says the incident, which occurred during a demonstration Monday evening on Monument Avenue, did not happen as activists have claimed.

"A slow-motion analysis shows the officers spitting on the grass and not on the detainee who was sitting on a nearby curb. The frequent coughing and spitting was due to exposure to tear gas."

The video was recorded and posted on Twitter with more than 77,000 views.
