Body of Richmond kayaker found in James River

CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. -- The body of a missing kayaker was recovered from the James River.

The body of Jake Woollard, 30, of Richmond, was found June 4 near Fort Pocahontas at Wilson’s Wharf in Charles City County. His body was taken to the Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

“On June 3, 2020, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office received a call about an abandoned kayak found with clothes and a wallet in the area of Fort Pocahontas at Wilson’s Wharf,” a Charles City County Sheriff's Office spokesperson wrote in an email. “The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries was notified, and the area was searched by land and water. On June 4, 2020, around 8:30 a.m., the search resumed for the owner of the kayak.”

Woollard’s body was discovered at about 2 p.m.

The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
