PETERSBURG, Va. -- A man working next to the home says he heard shrill screams, then three shots.
Petersburg police are working what they believe is a murder/suicide.
"I just heard a scream and three gunshots,” said a man who did not want to give his name. "I live in a crazy city. It happens all of the time. I don’t think nothin’ of it. "
Police didn't have to go far to find a tragic scene, because the 200 block of Henry Street is about a block from the police department's back door.
The shooting around 3:30 Monday afternoon was contained to the Centre Hill home, according to Chief Travis Christian.
"Upon arrival units found two dead, male and a female here in the rear of the residence,” said Christian.
Police say the crime was domestic in nature but are unsure why it all played out here: Crime Insider sources tell me the man and woman are from the Richmond area and say this was not their home.
"Unknown if it's husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend, but it is domestic related," said Christian.
Construction workers say they thought the pops were sounds of their trade.
"I thought it was banging from work, for real to be honest with you," said one worker.
As detectives and a forensics team worked the scene, the nearby renovation project paused briefly while the search for answers and clues was underway.
“Kind of a mixed area with residents and business, so we did have a number of people call in shots fired,” said Christian.
The two bodies were taken to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond, where an official cause of death will be determined.
