CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Students in Chesterfield County will return to school before Labor Day at the start of the 2021-22 school year, the
Chesterfield County School Board announced Tuesday morning.

Schools not on a year-round schedule will start on August 23, 2021 and end on June 3, 2022.

“We took the pre-Labor Day calendar proposal forward to the School Board nearly 16 months in advance because we want to provide families and staff members with enough time to prepare for this change,” Chesterfield Superintendent Dr. Merv Daugherty said. “Starting pre-Labor Day will allow our teachers to align their curriculum in a way that will enhance learning and better support our students’ academic needs by maximizing the instruction time available prior to mid-year and end-of-year testing.”

Recent changes to state law have allowed school districts to start their school year before Labor Day. Henrico, Richmond, and Hanover schools have not pushed up their 2021 start of school dates.
