Posted

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a reoccurring phone scam designed to solicit payment from individuals for missing jury duty.

The Sheriff’s Office said the unknown individuals advise residents that they have missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest, unless they quickly pay a fine.

“These scams have grown in sophistication to wear actual names of Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office employees are used,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Audible sound effects may be heard in the background attempting to influence the targeted citizen that the call is being generated from the actual Sheriff’s Office.”

Officials are reminding residents to not fall for these attempts.

If you are unsure if you are actually speaking with an employee the Sheriff’s Office you can advise the caller you will call them back to verify the attempt. You can call the Sheriff’s Office at 804-748-1261.

The Sheriff’s Office asks, if you or someone you know feels you are a victim of a phone scam contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
