RICHMOND, Va. — Fast-moving storms, some with heavy lightning, moving through Central Virginia knocked out power to thousands and caused damage in parts of the area Monday afternoon.

Fire officials said a teenage boy was struck by lightningwhen a storm hit his Henrico neighborhood around 4:30 p.m.  The teen was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  That same storm is believed to have sparked a nearby transformer fire.

CBS 6 Chief Meteorologist Zach Daniel said one of the storm cells moving through Glen Allen had a massive amount of lightning that could cause power outages based on cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

However, Daniel pointed out that while the storms are leaving their mark on the metro, they are not severe.

In fact, when the storm rolled through the city’s Museum District, it downed a tree and stoplight in front of the Science Museum of Virginia on Broad Street.
