RICHMOND, Va. -- Carolyn Johnson has lived on Richmond's Southside for years. She was one of many who attended the Richmond Police Department's town hall meeting with the city's new chief Wednesday night.
"I think it's better if you interact, it gives you a more personal feel of who you're dealing with and not just a badge and a uniform," said Johnson.
Since becoming Richmond's top cop, Chief Alfred Durham has been meeting with the community to talk about his plan for policing the city, and answer any questions or concerns from people in the neighborhoods.
"I think it’s better if you interact,” Chief Durham said. “It gives you a more personal feel of who you’re dealing with and not just a badge and a uniform.”
"It just drives me now to do better," Durham added."What can we do better by listening to the community?"
CBS 6 asked the chief about a recent shooting at the Richmond Inn and Suites. The chief has said the motel is a haven for drug crime and prostitution.
"We're compiling data for the last five years and looking at the data, we're also working with administration and a couple of council members to talk about the permitting and licensing of those establishments," said Chief Durham.
Still, while neighbors said there is also room for improvement, they are looking forward to seeing positive changes.
"I'm very excited about him and all his staff," said Johnson.
