CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A nine-year-old girl was charged with possession of a weapon on school property after she was caught with a knife at Matoaca Elementary School on Monday.
"The student did not display the knife or threaten anyone with it. No one was injured," a Chesterfield Police spokeswoman said.
The folding knife was not taken out of its box, police added.
"We take seriously our responsibility to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that is free from distraction and disruption," Chesterfield Schools spokesman Tim Bullis said in a statement. Bullis added he was limited in what he could say given federal privacy laws. "Students who violate student conduct regulations are subject to suspension and/or expulsion, and, if the offense is a violation of the law, to prosecution."
