RICHMOND, Va. – A fire in the Crossings at Bramblewood in South Richmond has left a family without a home.

The fire, which could be seen from miles away, was marked under control around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Maintenance personnel discovered the fire, which was leaping from the front of a home in the 1400 block of Whitesand Drive.

Occupants were not home at the time. The smoke alarm next neighbors went off and those residents evacuated. There is smoke damage to the adjacent apartments, but they are habitable, said Lt. Shawn Jones.

The tenants, who have renter's insurance, will be moved to a new unit.

The apartment where the fire started was a total loss. Firefighters believe that the fire began in the living room but are unsure at this point in their investigation as to what caused the fire.

The fire remains under investigation.
