RICHMOND, Va. -- Little girls today dressed in their Sunday best, ready for a special daddy/daughter dance.

But unlike similar dances, this one was held inside the Richmond City Justice Center.

Every daughter was crowned by their father, before taking to the dance floor. The Date-with-Dad Weekend is aimed at strengthening father-daughter relationships.

Organizers of the social event, say it’s all about connecting and reconnecting incarcerated fathers with their daughters, with hopes to motivate each dad, to do better once they are released.

"The message to them is to stay off the corner, spend more time at home with your children, communicate with them,” said Richmond Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. “And, it's very important for them to connect with their daughters, because it has been proven statistically that fathers who have a good relationship with their daughters can keep them from the criminal word."
