CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- If you're using a heat pump to stay warm there are a few important tips you should follow to make sure your heat keeps flowing.
Bill Folk with Barnes Heating and Cooling said that when the snow stops, you should take a few minutes to check your outside unit.
"Try to clean your outdoor unit off, make sure the coil is good and clean," he said.
Folk said some homeowners do not realize their heat pump goes into a defrost mode and the water draining off the coils needs to be able to flow freely.
Another important tip: drop the temp on your thermostat.
"You'd want to set it a little bit cooler then what you are used to living at, doesn't put as much strain on the unit," Folk said.
Folk also advise you to do not trying running your heat pump all the time, because it won't allow your unit to run as efficiently.
Additionally, walk around your house and make sure all of your vents are open.
And one of the biggest tips is changing out your air filter because a clean filter allows your heat pump to run more efficiently.
