HENRICO COUNTY, Va -- Henrico firefighters deployed their water rescue unit Wednesday for a call about a duck trapped in the ice.

The rescue happened at a retention pond at a shopping center in the 9990 block of Brook Road. When firefighters arrived, they found a duck that looked like it was in distress.

It so happened that the water rescue team was set to train at another location at around the same time. So, fire department leaders decided to send the team to the pond instead, so they could practice in a real situation.

The rescue crews say the duck was a little suspicious of the rescue effort at first. Eventually, though, the water rescue team was able to catch it.

Firefighters say the water rescue team was able to get some great practice by deploying to the rescue.

If you see an animal in trouble on the ice, firefighters urge you to not try to rescue it yourself.
