PETERSBURG, Va. -- Petersburg Vice-Mayor Carl "Mike" Ross has died suddenly Friday, confirmed city officials.

The exact cause of death has not been released.

Ross had served on Petersburg's City Council since 2003.

Prior to that, he spent six years on the city of Petersburg school board.

The public visitation will be held on Jan. 28, from noon to 8 p.m., with the wake service from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  on the same day.

The funeral will be on Thursday, Jan. 29,  at 11 a.m., at Mount Olivet Baptist Church located at 800 Augusta Avenue.

Mayor W. Howard Myers released this statement on Ross' passing:

"I am saddened about the loss of Carl “Mike” Ross. His passing marks the end of someone who
was an integral part of the city of Petersburg. His kind spirit will be sorely missed. I will miss the
camaraderie he and I shared sitting next to each other during city council sessions. His life is in
God’s hands now and I pray that we will continue to move forward as a city through his blessings.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time of loss.”
