CHESTERFIELD, Va. -- A crime alert out of Chesterfield, where police say a 17-year-old followed an elderly woman to her car and tried to steal her purse.
But it appears he messed with the wrong woman.
The attempted theft happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday, in a Food Lion parking lot in the 4100 block of Meadowdale Boulevard, in the Meadowvale shopping center.
Police said the teen grabbed the woman's purse but she held on tight.
The woman was knocked to the ground and dragged across the parking lot. Police said the teen finally let go and ran, but several witnesses chased him.
“The younger guy was trying to say let me explain…but it was quite evident he was trying to get away,” said Connie Claiborne. “The elderly, they've earned their time, they’re the reason we have the opportunities that we have. Shouldn’t nobody be going around trying to take advantage of that – it hits me down here."
Police said the woman is in the hospital tonight with non-life-threatening injuries. The teenager was arrested and charged with robbery.
