HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- Some residents in one Hanover County neighborhood are fuming after they found messages from the Ku Klux Klan just before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The KKK fliers were found scattered through yards along Walnut Grove Drive in Mechanicsville on Sunday.
Neighbors contacted CBS 6 News saying they do not feel safe knowing someone is distributing "messages of hate" before dawn.
Although this has happened before in communities in Central Virginia, people who live in the area said this is the first time their neighborhood has been targeted.
“I just wanted to come out here, pick it up and put it in the trash,” one woman said.
When this has happened in this past, the Hanover County Sheriff's Office noted that distributing the fliers is legal. However, officials said that deputies do take note of people moving around at night in residential areas.
