RICHMOND, Va. – If you are looking for a little help getting ready for the Ukrop’s Monument Ave. 10K on March 28, the YMCA has a ten-week training program starting Jan. 17.
There is a $55 fee to register, but there are two new training teams this year. One is at Bensley Community Center in Chesterfield and another at Bellemeade Community Center in Richmond. Both will have lower rates.
Organizers said it is part of an effort to make the areas more active.
“Typically there's not much going on there in terms of physical fitness, so this offers an opportunity that's low cost,” said Jacki Quinlan with Sports Backers. “We offer income-based rate and are trying to get people out moving in an area where people aren't really active.”
Becky Hapeman, who is a team coach at Bensley, said the event is a journey.
“We're all in this journey together. This group is about this journey together. For all abilities, whether you're new or have been doing this for years," Hapeman said.
Registration is open for the training teams, which run through March 28.
And for the first time, everyone who finishes the 10K this year will receive a medal.
