BAY CITY, Mich. — Cameras captured the moment a military mom in Michigan surprised her young daughter at school for her birthday.
WNEM reports that Shawna Welborn saw her daughter earlier this summer and wasn’t expected to see her again until Christmas, but Welborn had a big surprise for her today.
It was a great day for an assembly at MacGregor Elementary in Bay City.
Sienna Welborn took part in the assembly and she had no idea her mom was there to surprise her for Sienna’s eighth birthday.
“My heart is beating out of my chest right now,” the mom said before she surprised her daughter.
Shawna Welborn is in the Navy. She’s only spent a month with her daughter this year. Her military career is full of sad goodbyes.
As the students sang Happy Birthday, Shawna Welborn gave her daughter the best present ever.
“I’m overwhelmed right now. She just looked really shocked when I saw her,” Shawna Welborn said.
None of this would have been possible without the help of a teacher from the school.
“Sienna is the nicest, sweetest little girl. Her family is just wonderful,” Jodi Decuf said.
Decuf helped get the ball rolling by creating a day her student will never forget.
“I was crying. You can see it means so much to have her mom here,” Decuf said.
Shawna Welborn said her daughter has had to endure three deployments. She said her child always wanted a surprise like the ones she’s seen in Youtube videos. Welborn plans to enjoy every second with her little angel.
“We’re going to go to the pumpkin farm. Halloween’s our favorite time of the year,” she said.
Unfortunately Shawna Welborn leaves town again on Monday.
