MERCED, Calif. — A California couple who lives in an apartment complex where a newborn baby was found alive in a dumpster said they planned to adopt the child.
A man looking for recyclables in the trash found the baby wrapped in a towel earlier this week, according to a report from KOVR-TV. His screams alerted Annette Alvarez and Jimmy Alvarez, who live near by.
When they saw the child, she was covered in gnats and garbage. The baby, whose umbilical cord was still attached, was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
Annette Alvarez said they planned to name the girl Milagro, which is Spanish for “miracle.”
Police located the baby’s mother. The 13-year-old girl told investigators she recently had the baby,according to KCRA-TV.
