RICHMOND, Va. -- The opposition to a new stadium in Shockoe Bottom is still going strong even though the mayor withdrew his proposal for a new ballpark in May.
Dozens of protesters gathered on the Boulevard on Sunday in hopes of forming a ring around the Diamond. However, the gathering fell short of the 1,000 people they were hoping for.
The group, which is opposed to a new baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom, would like to see city leaders focus their efforts on renovating the Diamond with regional cooperation.

“Years ago the RMA has a plan to refurbish the Diamond and you had Henrico and Chesterfield and the City of Richmond -- and all of that unraveled,” one protester said.
Developers have been meeting with city officials to discuss plans for a new stadium on the Boulevard, but city council has not taken up any new proposals.
