USS BATAAN – The crew aboard the USS Bataan had to think fast when the pilot of a AV-8B Harrier realized his landing gear was not working properly.
“I took off and as I was climbing away from the deck I put my gear up and realized I had a gear malfunction,” U.S. Marine Corps Capt. William Mahoney said. “I immediately pulled the power back, slowed the aircraft down so I would not over speed the landing gear and then just went above the ship.”
While above the ship Mahoney and others came up with a plan to land safely back on the Bataan. They ended up using what Mahoney called an “amazing invention.” It took some pretty great piloting too.
