RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Police announced Friday that U.S. Marshals helped them arrest 49-year-old Walter Hill Jr. for malicious wounding after a shooting at the Blackwell Park basketball courts. But both shooting victims said Hill was not the person who pulled the trigger.
The violence began after several teens got into an argument with Hill and woman after they spotted the couple having sex near the basketball courts, according to police sources and confirmed by the victims.
Both shooting victims said Hill was angry the kids were making fun of him, so he called for armed reinforcement. The victims said a fight broke out when those reinforcements arrived in two cars.
"Two cars pulled up and he was like ‘y'all getting involved, so y'all gonna’ pay the consequences,’" a 19-year-old shooting victim, who requested a hidden identity, recalled. The 19-year-old victim was shot in the back and is now recovering at a rehab facility. "There were 11- to 15-year-old kids around."
The other shooting victim, a 17-year-old boy, was shot in the left hand, right abdomen and right elbow.
"After I finished running, I looked down and the blood was dripping," the second victim said.
The mother of the 19-year-old victim said she can't believe all of this played out in broad daylight with kids around.
"I mean out in the open, having sex with someone?” she said. “That's amazingly stupid."
The 19-year-old victim has at least three more weeks at the rehab facility before he will be sent home. The 17-year-old is out of the hospital, but had to return to get his bandages replaced Monday.
