AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Amelia County Public Schools informed parents that schools would close early Wednesday due to bad weather.
"After consulting with local emergency management officials and due to the recent heavy rains and potential flooding on area roads Amelia County Public Schools will close beginning at 12:00 noon today, Wednesday, April 30, 2014," the school system posted on social media."Buses may take longer to get students home today as some may need to be rerouted."
For parents and grandparents, they believed the decision to release 1700 students before more rain and severe weather came through was a smart one .
"We have got so many back roads and dirt roads still that buses have to go over and there is so much water everywhere," Ann Thomas, an Amelia county grandmother, said.
Allen Vernon, a spokesman with the County, told CBS 6 their Emergency Management team is monitoring the situation to alert residents of impassable roads as well as to make a decision regarding school on Thursday.
"We will have our maintance and transportation department go out and check those low lying areas to see if we have to go late or close schools tomorrow," Vernon said.
