RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Virginia State Police are investigating after a 33-year-old inmate at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt died Thursday in a suspected “inmate-on-inmate attack,” according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC).

The DOC said it would release the inmate’s name after his next-of-kin was notified about the death.

The inmate, who was pronounced dead at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, was serving a 12-year sentence for grand larceny and burglary.

He was scheduled to be released from prison in 2016.
