RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- When Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III wanted a new look for the season while in Richmond’s training camp, he wound up sitting in Candace Hargrove’s chair at the Beauty Bar just north of the city last Sunday.

Candace, not a football fan, said she got a text asking if she could squeeze someone in. She had no idea who it was, even after he arrived.

“The black truck pulled up and he introduced himself as Robert,” Candace said while doing a young woman’s hair Thursday afternoon.

He said the tall, strapping young man (“I had to tell him to scoot down” in the chair) came with an entourage - his mom, dad, wife, niece.

“Tony, who was with him, was saying, ‘Hey R.G.’ And I was like, ‘Who’s that?’”

She said it took about an hour to give him the cornrows that he wanted. “He was very humble,” Candace recalled. “We never talked football.”

Candace said he had nice hair – “no extensions, all natural.”

She smiled and didn’t comment when asked about what kind of tip she got.

RG3 definitely gave her some love during one of the question-and-answer sessions with reporters on Monday. One asked about the new look.

“Candace at the Beauty Bar did my hair in Richmond,” he answered. “Shout out to you guys. Thank you for the good ‘do.”

Asked if there’s one athlete in the world she would like to have in her chair, Candace replied, “David Beckham. I would like to do his hair.”

Then she let me sit in her chair, giving me some cornrows while she told the rest of the story.

To see that, and hear how my hair compares to RG3’s, you have to watch the video report here.
