ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WTVR) - A Virginia mother is furious after she said her six-year-old son was left alone in a hot daycare van.

Cassaundra Johnson said the van was driving children back to Capital Kids Preschool and Learning Center from a field trip in Alexandria on Wednesday.

Johnson said her son, Marqui, fell asleep in the backseat during the trip.

"I couldn't breathe out of my nose," said Marqui, who exited the van and then walked over to the daycare's entrance.  His older sister, who also attends Capital Kids and was standing by the front door said, "He was all hot and sweaty and stuff."

Fairfax police believe the workers overlooked the little boy, who was left alone in the parking lot of the daycare for more than an hour, on a day when temperatures were in the 90s.

Police say no one ever realized Marqui was in the van and that the child got out on his own and knocked on the daycare's front door.

Police are still deciding whether to charge the daycare worker.
