RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - If you are planning to go to the James River in Richmond this weekend, you need to read and share this!
The River level in Richmond rose rapidly Friday night into Saturday early morning to an 11 foot crest. At this level (above 9FT), you are required by law (and for your own safety) to have a permit to be in or on the James. I do not expect the James to fall back below 9 feet until about 8 a.m. Sunday.
Sunday's River level will remain above the 5 foot "Life Vest" level (when you're required by law to wear a life vest if you get in or on the James). So if you do cool off in the James Sunday, you must wear a life vest. They're inexpensive, and could save your life.
My advice: leave the River to the pros this weekend. Cool off in the pool or at the beach. The water temperature at Virginia Beach is still really cool in the low 70s.
