FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Police were investigating reports of drug activity when they say a man fired at police officers.
Around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the 200 block of Greystone Court at Fall Hill Apartments to investigate reports of drug activity involving 19-year-old Nelson Kennedy, Jr. When police went into his apartment, Kennedy’s mother told them that Kennedy was in his room.
When one of the officers peeked inside Kennedy’s room, they saw a person holding a gun. The officers then headed out of the apartment, taking Kennedy’s mother with them.
Later, Kennedy allegedly shot one round, which went through the door of the apartment across the hallway. Two officers stayed with the mother until it was safe for her to leave.
According to a press release, Kennedy then fired several shots towards one of the officers. As additional officers responded to the scene, police say Kennedy fired another round at a patrol car pulling into the parking lot. Police later found out that one of the rounds hit a Saturn and damaged the gas tank.
No one was injured.
Authorities say Kennedy called 911 and turned himself in shortly after the shooting. He was taken into custody around 10:45 p.m.
Kennedy was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted capital murder, shooting into an occupied building, shooting into an occupied emergency vehicle and obstruction of justice. Police say the charges are felonies. Kennedy was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail and is held without bond.
Police are continuing their investigation.
