HIGHLAND SPRINGS, Va. (WTVR) - A gun was discovered around 10:30 Tuesday morning near a dumpster outside Highland Springs High School in eastern Henrico County.
The gun was discovered by a school safety officer who saw two 10th grade students in the parking lot near the weapon, according to Henrico Schools spokesman Andy Jenks. The safety officer then informed a Henrico Police School Resource Officer about the situation.
"Police responded and the students were detained," Jenks said.
Henrico Police spokeswoman Lt. Linda Toney said no charges have been at this time.
Jenks said no lock down was issued at the school since the gun was discovered outside of the school.
"In this case we believe our system worked exactly the way it is supposed to. That there was a schools security officer on the scene, a school resource officer on the scene, something was observed and they responded appropriately," Jenks said.
