(CBS News) — Researchers at the University of Ohio say they may know why some women struggle to keep off weight as they age.

They found the female hormone estrogen suppresses an enzyme that produces fat. But as women get older, especially after menopause, they pack on pounds because  they lack the estrogen to fight the fat producing enzyme.

Researchers say this is especially true among women who have type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
