Roanoke, Wasena Park (WDBJ)—A Roanoke man's 2012 New Year's resolution was completed Sunday.
Mark Hammer began January 1, 2012, with a goal to run 52 miles (for each week in the year). He started one mile at a time and built up his endurance.
The goal ended today when Hammer completed the run within a matter of hours. He told WDBJ that he took part in the challenge as a way to spread awareness about type 2 diabetes. Several of his family members suffered with the disease.
“So today is the culmination of a year-long journey. I'm doing the break out of diabetes challenge. So it says break out of diabetes here and every weekend I've done an additional mile. So the first weekend in January, I ran one mile. The second weekend I ran two,” he said.
