Mass honors children, adult killed in school shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (CNN) – Friday night people in Newtown, Connecticut gathered to remember those who lost their lives in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning. A memorial mass was held at Saint Rose Church.

Police said the suspected gunman, who they’ve identified as Adam Lanza, killed 26 people. Twenty of those were children and six were adults.

A parent told CNN that principal Dawn Hochsprung and a psychologist are among the dead. People in the community say all they can think about is what they have lost.

“Dawn, the principal at Sandy Hook, I had dinner with her last spring. She’s exciting, she was exuberant, she was just an incredible educator, and to lose somebody like that in our district, you know…it’s sad, because they lost a leader today at Sandy Hook,” said one parent.

“Just a tragic, tragic, situation for the teachers, the principals, and those angels. That’s all I keep thinking about is those angels,” added another.

Hochsprung announced this fall that Sandy Hook Elementary would implement a new security system to ensure the safety of their students.
