Virginia woman warns others about harassing phone calls

Posted

HAMPTON (WTVR) - A Virginia woman is warning others about egging on scammers.

Lydia Wilkins of Hampton said after weeks of getting phone calls from a number with an 876 area code, she finally picked up. She said someone claiming to be from a  Jamaican company answered and claimed Wilkins won millions of dollars and a Mercedes in a lotto she never played.

She said she knew right way that  it was a scam, but led the caller on to see what would happen. The calls, she said, continued.

"I think they were trying to get me emotionally attached to the money before they told me," she said. "I know what was coming next they were going to tell me I had to send them such and such amount of money before they could transfer it over."

Wilkins said she reported the calls to police, but was told since the calls are from out of the country, there was not much they can do.
