BBB has warning about area contractor

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - From Henrico to Chesterfield, alleged victims say a local contractor is at the center of their frustration.

They’re talking about Dave Isom, the man they accuse of taking their money and running after hiring Isom’s company to complete improvement projects at their homes.

Henrico’s Chris Dolan says he’s one of Isom’s victims.

“At some point it's going to catch up to him " Dolan said.

CBS 6 News contacted the Better Business Bureau about Isom and his Old Richmond Exteriors LLC business.

A representative there says the agency has looked into more than a dozen complaints about the company in the past seven months.

In fact, the company now has an “F” rating with the BBB and the latest complaint, according to Barbara Homiller, was filed on Nov. 9.

“Taking people’s money up front and not doing the work and we still have one complaint open. We don't have any explanation for what's going on from him and they aren’t able to get him to call back, so that’s a problem " Homiller said.

Chris Dolan tells CBS 6 News he hired Isom to build a deck and paint their Henrico home.

Dolan says he regrets paying deposits for both projects. The deck was built by subcontractors Isom paid, but Dolan says the other work was never done. He says Isom gave him the run around, then stopped returning calls.

Dolan and his wife are now suing Isom to get their two thousand dollars back. CBS 6 News tried to reach Isom at two different addresses, to no avail.

After leaving him phone messages, he returned our call. While Isom didn’t deny taking customers’ money and not finishing the work, he said his company fell on hard times and closed down in August.

He cited sickness in his family as another reason why things went downhill. Isom says he has since found another job and is using money from that job to refund money to previous customers. He told CBS 6 that he is very sorry about the way things transpired.

He says he has already refunded some customers their money but wouldn’t say how many.

Isom also said he plans to pay the rest of the customers back within the next 30 to 45 days. In the meantime, he says his Old Richmond Exteriors website is still up and running and customers can reach him that way, so they can resolve their issues.

The Dolans tell us they aren’t hopeful at all that they will get their money back, however they do plan to attend a court date in December.

Isom tells CBS 6 News he will be there and that he will repay the Dolans their money.

CBS 6 News will continue to follow this story and bring you any new developments.
