One company tried to capitalize on Hurricane Sandy, and now it is feeling the backlash.
The set-up: People stuck inside with nothing to do but surf the web until the power goes out might want to use the time to shop.
The Los-Angeles Times reports that retailer American Apparel sent out an email blast Monday night to shoppers on the East Coast, offering a 20% site-wide discount for 36 hours to shoppers in nine states hardest hit by Sandy, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
“In case you’re bored during the storm,” the ad said. “Just Enter SANDYSALE at Checkout.”
The seemingly bright idea fizzled rather quickly. Online reaction to the promo was negative with people upset the company was capitalizing off the deadly storm.
Really @americanapparel? Sandy Sale email blast?” David Honig tweeted. “The lowest of low.”
The California-based retailer was not the only to offer storm-related sales. Urban Outfitters offered free shipping on all orders with the discount code “ALLSOGGY.”
