EAST PENN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WNEP) — A charge of conspiracy to commit attempted murder was added Thursday to the list of charges against a grandson and his girlfriend in Carbon County.
Last month a Grandmother survived an attack where authorities believe was actually part of a plot meant to kill her and eventually her husband as well.
Amber Steigerwalt and Jake Wertman have been locked up since they were arrested last month. They arrived for a hearing before a District Magisterial Judge in Palmerton.
Police said they plotted to kill Wertman’s Grandparents Marge and Tom in their home. Investigators said their motive was to get his Grandparents’ home and money.
Marge Wertman testified when she came home the house was in darkness. She was attacked by Amber Steigerwalt and was stabbed twice in the neck. She testified that, her grandson, Jake Wertman blocked the door so she couldn’t get help and stopped her from calling 911.
Jake Wertman eventually took his grandmother to a hospital, and she recovered. Police said the duo also planned on killing Thomas Wertman, the grandfather.
The District Magisterial Judge bound all of the charges over to Common Pleas Court.
No word on when a trial date will be set.
