Richmond, VA (WTVR) – If there had not already been enough talk and controversy in the last few months about a proposed toll on Interestate 95 in Sussex County, now Virginia’s Department of Transportation warns more tolls may be coming to a road near you.
VDOT says Virginia’s gas tax is no longer bringing in enough revenue because drivers are traveling more, so it needs to explore new ways to pay for road maintenance. That would likely come in the form of new tolls.
It could still be several more years before VDOTeven comes up with plans to build new tolls. But when the agency does, it’ll likely consider more populated parts of the state first, including Northern Virginia.
