HEAT WAVE: Dangerous heat and humidity threatening Virginia

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Are you ready for this? Dangerous heat and humidity will make it unbearable to be outdoors for any length of time Friday into the beginning of next week. A huge heat ridge that has been producing high temperatures in the nation’s Heartland this week ranging 100-115 degrees is expanding its grip eastward toward us. In anticipation of this heat wave, parts of the Commonwealth are already under an Excessive Heat Watch for Friday.

Also the Carolinas are bracing for impact as well with Excessive Heat Warnings (in dark red). On this map, you can see much of the central U.S. is still being hit hard by the high heat, with Heat Advisories (orange) and Excessive Heat Warnings (pink):

We did hit the triple digits a few times in 2011, but we haven’t seen a prolonged stretch of extreme heat and humidity like this will be since 2010. There were no 100-degree-days in 2009.

As a reminder, here is the Heat Index graph with what the associated conditions feel like to your body:

Be sure to follow some of these simple heat safety tips through the Fourth of July Holiday:
