WASHINGTON (WTVR) - The US Department of Education wants a fine levied against Virginia Tech -- in the wake of the 2007 deadly campus shootings -- to be reinstated.
The department has asked US Education Secretary Arne Duncan to uphold the $55,000 fine against the school for delayed warnings during the massacre that left 33 people dead, including the gunman.
A judge dismissed the fine in April ruling that the university did not violate a federal law that requires schools to issue timely warnings of any campus threat.
The state Attorney General's office is representing Virginia Tech in the case and has until June 1 to file a response.
