BLACKSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – It may have been 58 degrees in Blacksburg yesterday but it didn’t stop snow from showing up on the ground.

Winter sports organizations VT Snow and the Blacksburg Boarders Club managed to bring SnowJam, a ski and snowboard competition, to the Virginia Tech campus Thursday.

Outside of fundraising and securing sponsors, the most visible item they secured was nearly 40 tons of snow, which traveled 150 miles from Massanutten Ski Resort in Harrisonburg.

The event included a 20-foot tall, 25-foot-wide, 90-foot-long scaffold, which served as a launching pad for skiers and snowboarders.

Some 25 people milled about with shovels. Dump trucks and bulldozers were used to pack the snow along the ramp.

Not only was this the first winter sports event of this magnitude for Blacksburg, but it was also Galvanic’s first trip to the East Coast.
