PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Petersburg police are investigating a bizarre crash involving an all terrain vehicle and an SUV that took place Friday morning.

The driver of the ATV, who police said was not wearing a helmet, slammed into the left side of the SUV and was on the pavement bleeding.

The 25-year-old man from Petersburg was flown to VCU Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV was shaken up but not injured.

A police spokesperson said the ATV driver ran a stop sign as the SUV was passing through the intersection.

Special equipment was brought in for the police to use to recreate the accident.

A man who lives nearby said he has seen other ATVs in the area traveling at high speeds and running through stop signs in recent months.

Additionally, police said they received a call Thursday about someone riding an ATV recklessly around the city. It is illegal to drive an ATV on city streets in Petersburg.

Police say Thursday, a 9-1-1 call came in, also complaining about an ATV being driven recklessly on a city street.
