Deputies respond to shooting, fight outside Amelia County home

AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - The Amelia County Sheriff's Office  is investigating a shooting outside an Amelia County home late Sunday night.

Sheriff Rick Walker told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil the deputies were called to a home on Howard Road near the Amelia - Powhatan County line around 10:00 p.m. Sunday.

Once they arrived on scene, deputies saw what they described as a melee, some 20 people outside of the home fighting.

During the fight,  at least people were injured, one of the injured was shot in the hand, according to a witness.

The sheriff said his deputies were familiar with the neighborhood and called for back-up from Virginia State Police and the Powhatan County Sheriff's Department.

A CBS 6 photojournalist arrived at the home around midnight Monday morning and saw Virginia State Police on scene and a vehicle being towed away from the area.
