Mitt Romney won the Virginia primary, and gained 43 delegates. Ron Paul grabbed 3 delegates.
Voter turnout at the polls was low, as expected, because this was not considered a hotly-contested primary race.
Even still, throughout the Greater Richmond area, the race was close for Romney. To view the results for the Commonwealth, just click here.
Take a look at the chart below to see how the numbers landed, and what percentage of voters hit the polls.
State voter totals at the polls tallied at just a little over 5%, which breaks down to 264,875 of 5,155,342 total voters coming out to vote.
Many people on our Facebook page said that they voted for Ron Paul to keep delegates from Romney, or because their candidate wasn’t on the ballot–in addition to his already dedicated fan-base.
Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich did not get the qualifying signatures to make the Virginia ballot.
With clear victories in key battleground states, Mitt Romney can effectively silence his critics and build a commanding lead in the Republican nomination for president. With just a few key losses, questions would mount about his ability to carry key states, like Virginia in the general election against President Obama.
