RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The unidentified remains of some victims of the 9/11 attacks were dumped in a landfill, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The Post reported that prior to being dumped, the remains of the Pentagon and Shankesville, Pa. victims were first incinerated at the Dover Air Force Base mortuary. [Read the Washington Post report]
The Post reported the Defense Department acknowledged the practice.
In a similar situation, last year the military admitted to dumping the ashes of some servicemen and women in a King George County Virginia landfill. The military said that practice lasted from 2003 to 2008.
Since 2008, the military said those remains had been disposed of at sea.
