RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - Even when the weather's delightful, it's time to think ahead and prepare for whatever winter brings Central Virginia.
This is Winter Preparedness Week in Virginia, and . The Department of Emergency Management is urging everyone to review their plans for what would happen if a winter storm rolled through and knocked out power for days.
Tens of thousands of people lost power for multiple days during Hurricane Irene. An ice storm can do the same, but adding cold temperatures making the situation more dangerous.
VDEM is urging families to develop a plan now to get ready:
- Have an out-of-town emergency contact, just in case.
- Have an emergency kit
- Stay informed before, during, and after a storm.
VDEM has an extensive checklist to make sure you have the supplies you need on its website.
