HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police issued a summons to Henrico County Supervisor Tyrone Nelson after an incident with a cyclist.

The incident happened Friday, just before noon, along the 6500 block of Osbourne Turnpike in eastern Henrico, according to Henrico Police.

"The preliminary investigation suggests the driver of the vehicle failed to give a three-foot distance when trying to pass the cyclist and struck her as both parties were traveling North on the roadway," a Henrico Police spokesperson wrote in an email about the incident. "The cyclist was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries."

Nelson was issued a summons for failing to move over and is cooperating with the investigation.

"This was an unfortunate situation. It is just a reminder that we all need to be more careful as we share the roadway. Praying for the cyclist," Nelson said in a statement to CBS 6.

Friday morning's incident happened about one mile from where cyclist Jonah Holland was struck by a car and killed last year.
