BEND, Ore. (WTVR) – An Oregon man is being hospitalized due to the Bubonic Plague.

OregonLive.com reports that the man, who is in his 50’s, was trying to get a mouse out of a stray cat’s mouth.  He fell ill days after being bitten by the cat.  Health officials say he is currently in critical condition.

According to the Center for the Disease Control, an average of seven plague cases are reported each year.  50% of the cases occur between the ages of 12 and 45, and history shows that men are more likely to get it than women.

The Bubonic Plague, also known as the “Black Death,” wiped out at least a third of Europe in the 14th century.
