The company that owns Giant Foods announced an agreement to buy Ukrop's.
Royal Ahold, which is based in Amsterdam, announced on its website: "Ahold's Giant-Carlisle Division agrees to acquire Ukrop's stores."
Royal Ahold owns both Giant and Martin's Food Markets, which have multiple stores in Virginia, a majority of them located in Northern Virginia.
At a news conference Thursday afternoon, company officials said the stores in central Virginia will continue to operate under the name Ukrop's for the time being, but that over the years, the company will look for ways to incorporate new elements that made Giant supermarkets and Martin's Food Markets succesful.
Ukrop's CEO Bobby Ukrop says that certain Ukrop's brand prepared foods will continue to be sold inside the stores, and that he will lead a new company to oversee that. He also said the Ukrop's brand would continue to honor its local commitments, including the Ukrop's Monument Ave 10K and the Christmas Parade, as best it can.
An executive with Giant also said that the company will hire current Ukrop's associates when they take over the 25 stores in the Richmond area.
