RICHMOND -
Fourteen weeks away from election day, the statewide Republican campaigns have to have a spring in their steps today.
A new poll from Survey USA has the three statewide candidates with double-digit leads.
In the Governor's race, Republican Bob McDonnell is leading Democrat Creigh Deeds 55% to 40%/ Just 5% of respondents are undecided. This is well outside of the 4.3% margin of error.
The poll reports that McDonnell leads in every region of the Commonwealth, including vote-rich Northern Virginia, an area that has increasingly favored Democrats.
"A poll is a snapshot in time, and at the end of the day the only poll that matters will take place on November 3rd," said McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin.
"Clearly there is growing momentum behind our positive campaign, and we are going to keep running like we are ten points behind."
Speaking by phone Deeds' spokesman Jared Leopold spoke to CBS 6 this morning. He says their campaign isn't getting too worked up about this poll either. They do have questions about the methodology of the poll, though. Leopold hinted the poll oversampled Republican-leaning votes based on the 53% of respondents who said they had voted for John McCain for President last year. McCain only gained 46% of the vote in 2008.
Leopold posted this comment on his twitter.com account yesterday: "McCain won Virginia 52-43, according to SUSA. Hmm...that's different from what I remember."
Leopold added that he's confident the public will hear Deeds' argument for why he should be governor.
In the undercard, incumbent Bill Bolling holds a 54-42 lead over former Governor Kaine's former Treasury Secretary Jody Wagner.
In the race for Attorney General, Republican Senator Ken Cuccinelli leads Democrat Steve Shannon 53-42. 6% answered undecided.
