Chesterfield County Missing Man Found Dead After Motocycle Crash (Wayne Covil)

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY - Friends and family of Ricky Viar made a shocking discovery late Sunday afternoon. Missing since July 2nd, a small group was out searching for himÂ… when they found his body and his motorcycle in a grassy area near the Powhite and Courthouse road.

For the last year, Viar has dated Linda Thurman's daughter. She says it's easy to describe Ricky Viar. "Extraordinary person. An Awesome person."

At the Barber Shop where Ricky worked on Hull Street, friends and co-workers used the front glass to express their grief.

Thurman was there to meet her daughter. "This tragedy that happened is just beyond me. He took my grand daughter, under his arm and just took her in as she was his own. She called him daddy. He's an extraordinary person."

Across the street at Mulligan's, Ricky is remembered for a warm smile and his quick wit, according to General Manager Cullen Jenkins. "He just had a generally good positive attitude. He was always wanting to cut a joke. If we were busy working, he would find a way to make us laugh, kind of just make us smile, things like that always. It was consistently like that with Ricky."

But family and friends are trying to come to terms with what has happened.

Lt. Dough Mooney with Chesterfield County Police says "It appears, unfortunately, he was the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash."

And it was family and friends searching for Ricky who made the discovery Sunday afternoon, in a tree line adjacent to the ramp to Courthouse Road off of the Powhite.

"It was very tough thing to see, you actually had to be out of your car to see where he went off the road", said Lt. Mooney.

Police say preliminary reports indicate the motorcycle went to the left as the ramp curved to the right. Lt. Mooney says it is now a joint investigation. "The state police are investigating the motorcycle crash aspect of this and our detectives were on scene at the missing person aspect."

The body has been sent to the medical examiners office to determine the exact cause and time of death.
